What is a Cool Roof?

A cool roof reflects and emits the sun’s heat back to the sky instead of transferring it to the building below. “Coolness” is measured by two properties, solar reflectance and thermal emittance.Both properties are measured from 0 to 1 and the higher the value, the “cooler” the roof.

Objective
The City of Chicago’s Small Business Improvement Fund (SBIF) helps make improvements to small business properties in select Chicago neighborhoods. The program uses tax increment financing (TIF) revenues to help owners of commercial and industrial properties within specific TIF districts to repair or remodel their facilities for their own business or on behalf of tenants.

Description
Program participants can receive matching grants to cover from 25% to 75% of SBIF-eligible costs with a $150,000 maximum assistance per project and per applicant.  The grants come in a the form of rebates, reimbursing building owners or tenants for eligible expenses. The grant does not have to be repaid.

Ethyline Propolyne Diene Terpolymer (EPDM) is a dimensionally stable membrane that can withstand and resist almost any type of nature-born stress. This single-ply roof membrane, also commonly referred to as a rubber roof system, utilizes carbon black as its the molecular “backbone” which enables it to take on characteristics such as the ability to expand up to 300% yet retain 100% structural memory. EPDM also has excellent weathering resistance and serves as a superb second generation (roof-over) application.

Our EPDM rubber roof systems offer reliability, low cost, low maintenance, and easy repairs. To our knowledge, EPDM has the lowest initial cost and is the most dependable roof systems for the budget-minded.

Roof coatings are an outstanding alternative when a full roof replacement is not required. Coatings can extend the life of a roof and provide a highly reflective surface that may lower roof surface temperatures.

Modified Bitumen

Composed of asphalt and reinforced with either polyester or fiberglass,modified bitumen roofs are a blend of traditional and modern roofing technologies. Two different polymers, Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) or Atactic Polypropylene (APP), are used to modify the membrane and impart greater elasticity and temperature flexibility. Since polyester fiberglass fortify the roof system, it exhibits more strength and resistance to punctures and is typically installed in various layers to provide a multi-tier protection system from water, extreme temperatures and wind uplift.

Built-Up Roof systems consist of multiple layers of felts, fabrics or mats that are saturated with bitumen, either asphalt or coal tar pitch. The surface of the roof can have a gravel application, a mineral cap sheet or a weather resistant coating to help protect the bitumen and felts from premature weathering.
